Complete the Circuit is a multi-sensory, interactive sound sculpture that plays with the tension between craft and industrialism through the relationship between soundscapes and textile production. As a textile artist, I am fascinated by the origins of computers based upon the technology of the Jacquard Loom and punch cards. Producing textiles is a labor-intensive and loud process. It is also a process that has predominantly been deemed as “women’s work” and always a “craft”, not “fine art”. The hand-knit textile consists of yarn spun with conductive thread, changing the fabric from an insulator to a conductor, allowing it to produce sound when the circuit is completed with touch.
